The Almena King Story

Jamaica born Almena King survived the difficulties of life in a small country to emerge with one of the most valuable inventions of the information technology age. She created a method that teaches Touch Typing in One Lesson! Her innovative method reduces training time from about 20 hours to just 20 minutes! 

Through many years of research, Almena has also developed techniques for reducing errors to zero and increasing typing speeds to 80 wpm in record time!

Almena’s teaching career started in a business college in Kingston, Jamaica in 1965 when she created her innovative Typing Method. She later established her own company and was successful, but Almena’s passion has always been to help people, specifically the need to help disadvantaged people learn marketable job skills and lift their quality of life.

While managing her company, Almena approached the Principal of Ocho Rios High School in Jamaica and offered to help students. The Principal expressed concern that students were leaving school with no job skills adequate for the tourist industry, the school had no funds.

Almena immediately volunteered her time and expertise and started a Business Education Pilot. The school could not afford typing books, so out of need and desperation Almena wrote her first book: “Touch Typing in One Lesson!” She taught her Typing Method as well as how to develop high Self-esteem and Self-worth, Grooming, Communication skills and other job related skills, free of charge!

The success of that Pilot led to the implementation of Business Education in High Schools in Jamaica, Almena was told many years later by the principal of the school.

Ms. King migrated to the United Kingdom 1981 and again went into teaching Job Skills to socially disadvantaged young people. She used her Typing and Self-development techniques as a tool to empower students to become job ready quickly. The success of her methods led to the British Government’s Basic Skills Unit Piloting and Naming her work: “The Almena Method!”

The Almena Typing Method is being used in England, Canada, the Caribbean and here in the USA by over a million students!  Almena has been featured in over 25 newspapers, television and radio shows.

Ms King has been the recipient of several Awards including a Commendation from former Mayer of Los Angeles – Tom Bradley for “simplicity, effectiveness”...  She was also nominated as “an outstanding contributor in the field of education and training”, by The American Association of Training and Development.
